Program Description

Dade Medical College’s Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with an emphasis in Addiction, Chemical Dependency, and Substance abuse, is designed to train practitioners in the field of addiction counseling, chemical dependency, substance abuse treatment, and provide students with a solid foundation in the knowledge of psychology. The psychology major prepares students for both entry-level jobs in the work force and advanced professional education in psychology. It encourages students to integrate and apply knowledge, and provides emphasis in Addiction Studies. By earning this degree, students can gain knowledge, competency, and skills in preparation for a state credential in addictions counseling. This degree can help students on their path to a fulfilling career of helping persons suffering from addiction to manage their conditions. With academic and practical lessons in substance abuse education, prevention, and treatment, students will be prepared to manage the challenges of a career in the dynamic and growing field of addiction services. The student will be issued a Bachelor of Science degree upon successful completion of the program, meeting all course requirements, and fulfilling all financial obligations to Dade Medical College. 

Program Objectives

It is the purpose of Dade Medical College’s Bachelor of Science Program in Psychology to provide students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to function effectively as an Addictions Counselor. Students will be trained to counsel and treat individuals at the professional level. Students will be given the tools to affect positive changes in health, prevention, health maintenance, rehabilitation, and to pass the licensing examination (CAP) administered by the Florida Board of Certification. To be an effective addictions counselor, a student must gain competency in each of eight Practice dimensions: 1. Clinical Evaluation-Assessment-Screening 2. Treatment Planning 3. Referral 4. Service Coordination 5. Counseling 6. Client, Family, and Community Education 7. Documentation. 8. Professional and Ethical Responsibilities. Addictions counseling is a demanding form of community outreach that requires patience, compassion, and a keen desire to help others in crisis. This program prepares students to help prevent substance abuse, counsel people with drug and alcohol problems, and provide services to people suffering from addiction.
